Oil vs. Serum: How to distinguish between them, choose them, and layer them?

Huile vs Sérum, comment les distinguer, les choisir, les superposer ?

ONCE YOU UNDERSTAND THEIR ROLE, EVERYTHING BECOMES CLEARER

This is a question we are asked very often: should you use a serum or an oil? What is the difference? Should they be applied together or separately? Once you understand their role, everything becomes clearer: oils and serums do not have the same function, the same texture, or the same purpose—and that is precisely what makes them a perfect duo.

SERUM: A CONCENTRATED INFUSION OF TARGETED ACTIVES

A serum is a concentrate of active ingredients, often formulated to target specific skin concerns. Its texture is usually fluid, water-based, or slightly gel-like. It is designed to penetrate quickly into the deeper layers of the epidermis, where creams or oils tend to act more on the surface.

There are as many serums as there are skincare needs:

Vitamin C serum

To brighten the complexion and smooth fine lines.

Hyaluronic acid serum

To plump and deeply hydrate the skin.

Retinol or fruit acid serum

To boost cellular renewal.

Niacinamide, zinc, or ceramide serum

To soothe and regulate sensitive or blemish-prone skin.

WHEN SHOULD YOU USE IT?

Immediately after cleansing and toning, on clean and slightly damp skin. Apply a small amount with gentle pressing motions, and follow with a cream or oil.

OIL: A NOURISHING AND PROTECTIVE TREATMENT

Plant oils work mainly on the surface. They do not penetrate deeply into the skin, but they are essential for nourishing the skin, strengthening the hydrolipidic barrier, and preventing dehydration. They seal in previously applied skincare—such as serums—and create a protective shield against external aggressors.

Contrary to popular belief, oils are not reserved for dry skin. Many are extremely lightweight, with a dry-touch finish, making them perfectly suitable for combination or oily skin. Some are even sebum-regulating, anti-inflammatory, or healing.

WHEN SHOULD YOU USE IT?

As the final step of your evening routine, or even alone as a replacement for a cream depending on your needs. In the morning, choose a lightweight, non-comedogenic oil if you plan to apply makeup afterwards.

CAN YOU USE THEM TOGETHER?

Yes! Here is how to layer them correctly: the golden rule in skincare is to always apply products from the lowest molecular weight to the highest—that is, from the lightest to the richest texture.

ORDER OF APPLICATION

  • Cleanser (single or double cleanse)
  • Toner
  • Serum
  • Cream
  • Oil

Applying oil before serum would be a mistake: it would create an occlusive film that prevents the serum from penetrating properly.
